Kordsa tests process-induced residual stresses in manufacturing thermosetting polymers

Process induced residual stresses in composite materials are unavoidable, but they should be taken into consideration in both the design and manufacturing process in order to meet the requirements of dimensional accuracy and good mechanical performance. Kordsa Composites Technologies Project Leader Dr. Fatih Ertu?rul Öz sheds light on distorting effects in the manufacture of thermosetting polymer composites.

Fiber reinforced composite materials have been increasingly used in various structural components in the aerospace and automotive industries. This increased usage requires a detailed understanding of the process-induced residual stresses. Residual stresses are the stresses that remain in a material or structure after the source of these stresses has been removed. The non-uniform distribution of residual stresses results in deformation, matrix cracking, and even delamination.

The article in the Reinforcer Magazine by the Project Leader Dr. Fatih Ertugrul Öz, presents process-induced residual stresses and their distorting effects in the manufacture of thermosetting polymer composites and shows the effect of the different properties of constituents.

Fewer pores, greater impact tolerance: Peter Dornier Foundation Prize 2026 honours material research on fibre-reinforced composite components for aerospace industry

Microscopically small pores that form during manufacture, or barely visible impact damage, can severely impair the load-bearing capacity and service life of fibre-reinforced composite components. Two young researchers have presented groundbreaking work in this field and will both be awarded the 2026 Peter Dornier Foundation Prize: Dr.-Ing. Benedikt Neitzel from the Technical University of Ilmenau for his doctoral thesis on pore minimisation in the RTM process, and Johanna Buschmann, M.Sc., for her master’s thesis, completed at the German Aerospace Centre, on the improved impact tolerance of 3D fabrics compared to 2D laminates.
