New research center for carbon fibers from Saxony

A carbon fiber production plant should enable the Dresden-based scientists to produce carbon fibers with a variety of mechanical properties (c) 2016 RCCF
Highly innovative carbon fiber technology is a prerequisite for many modern lightweight engineering applications. Researchers at TU Dresden have therefore combined their expertise in this field to form the new Research Center Carbon Fibers Saxony (RCCF). The aim of the RCCF is to establish a joint research initiative in the field of tailored carbon fibers for pioneering functionalized and structural materials. The official founding ceremony takes place at the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology at TU Dresden on the 18.04.2016.
The RCCF clusters TU Dresden’s existing expertise in the high-tech field of fiber-reinforced lightweight engineering. It also aims to consolidate Dresden’s position as a leading lightweight engineering location by shifting research focus onto tailored composites with polymeric, ceramic and metallic matrices. These novel materials are set to become a market-leading technology, and it is with this trend in mind that the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology (ILK) and the Institute of Textile Machinery and High Performance Material Technology (ITM) have joined forces to create a center for research into continuous development chains stretching from fibrous raw materials to finished products.

The RCCF will combine and expand on the research carried out by the two institutes to date. Participating researchers will study both fossil and renewable materials as potential base products and develop carbon fibers for new functionalized materials. Particular emphasis will be placed on the application of newly developed fibers in novel structural and functionalized materials, with research findings to be transferred directly into taught content at TU Dresden. Both institutes also attach significant importance to the transfer of new insights to industrial applications.

The arrival of Prof. Hubert Jäger in 2014 saw TU Dresden gain an expert of international standing in the field of carbon fibers and fiber composite technologies. He and his colleagues at the ILK conduct high-quality research aimed at the development of novel carbon fibers based on polymeric and renewable materials. Prof. Jäger is able to draw on 28 years of industrial experience at the SGL Group, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of carbon products and materials. As holder of the Chair of Lightweight Systems Engineering and Multi Material Design at TU Dresden he now heads research into carbon fibers for applications in the automotive, mechanical engineering and plant construction sectors as well as future-oriented solutions for the construction industry.

Prof. Jäger is enthusiastic about the forthcoming cooperation between the two highly respected research institutes: “The RCCF is set to flourish into an internationally renowned center for cutting-edge research into tailored carbon fibers. Its scope and strategy make it a unique high-tech cluster which will not only deliver novel materials and composites for industrial applications, but also secure Dresden’s position as a leading center for lightweight engineering over the long term.”

One of the center’s first important milestones is the commissioning of a carbon fiber production plant which will enable the Dresden-based scientists to produce carbon fibers with a variety of mechanical properties. Amongst other benefits, the plant will allow them to identify parameters at laboratory scale for later application to industrial-scale production facilities. The carbon fiber production plant is due to be commissioned in June 2016 on the occasion of the 20th Dresden International Lightweight Engineering Symposium.

Modern precursor fiber production facilities have already been installed at the ITM. Prof. Chokri Cherif, Director of the ITM and Professor of Textile Technology at TU Dresden, sees a bright future for the new research center: “The establishment of the RCCF and the commissioning of the carbon fiber production plant herald the start of a new, intensified phase of both fundamental and applied research into carbon fibers. We look forward to setting new benchmarks in the field of carbon fiber development and gaining insights which will resonate around the world.”

Lenzing advances its transformation: Higher EBITDA, stronger free cash flow and more than EUR 200 million in cost savings

The business performance of the Lenzing Group in 2025 was affected particularly in the second half of the year by external factors such as international tariff measures, subdued demand and declining market prices. As a result, revenue decreased slightly by 2.3 percent to EUR 2.6 billion, primarily due to lower fiber sales volumes and lower prices for fibers and pulp, which were further negatively impacted by currency developments. Nevertheless, thanks to the comprehensive Performance Program, Lenzing was able to improve its operating performance and key financial indicators compared with the previous year.
