TfS Product Carbon Footprint Guideline is now TÜV certified

TfS confirms that the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Guideline developed in 2022 has been formally certified by TÜV Rheinland Energy. This is an important cornerstone of the implementation of the certification and auditing process that Together for Sustainability (TfS) is developing for the guideline.

Says Peter Saling, BASF, Co-Chair of the TfS Scope 3 GHG emissions programme “The certification by TÜV Rheinland has come about through intense cooperation between TÜV and TfS, resulting in some improvements to the guideline and ending with a successful certification. It shows that the guideline is in accordance with important generic standards and users can be confident that they are working with a guideline that was checked and accepted by the independent external certification of the TÜV. This certification is another step in the adoption of guideline for chemicals as a drop-in solution for other international frameworks.”

TÜV Rheinland Energy has carried out an independent assessment of the TfS guideline for specifications for supplier’s PCF Calculation (TfS guideline). The scope of the review was to check if the approach meets the requirements of the main standard/ guidelines: ISO 14067: 2018, WBCSD – Lifecycle Metrics for Chemical Products: 2014, GHG Protocol Product Standard: 2011 and BASF SE – Guideline for Product Carbon Footprint Calculations of companies: 2021.

On the basis of the assessment TÜV Rheinland Energy concluded that the PCF methodology approach of TfS guideline, is scientifically based and reflects the state of the art. It also concluded that the approach and principles behind the methodology were generally appropriate for the assessment of potential greenhouse gas emissions impacts of chemicals. TÜV Rheinland Energy found the approach as well as the calculation examples coherent, transparent and comprehensible. For the future, TfS will follow up on TÜV Rheinland’s recommendations to continually enhance the methodology in line with the developments in science, technology and chemical industry and to adapt the guideline accordingly.


The TÜV certification is a cornerstone of the implementation of the TfS certification and auditing process of the PCF Guideline that is currently being developed.
