Assistant Professor Homa Maleki awarded Alexander von Humboldt research fellowship

Assistant Professor Ms Homa Maleki from Birjand University, Iran, has been awarded a research fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for a total of 15 months from June 2022 to October 2024.

She received the fellowship for joint research in the field of electrospinning and nanofibre yarns for medical technology applications. The associated research project will develop drug-eluting nanofibre yarns with core-sheath structure and shape memory polymers.

"We are excited about the joint exchange at ITA in the field of electrospinning with such an excellent scientist as Prof. Maleki and look forward to joint publications and networking with the scientist and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation," explains Prof. Gries, Director of the Instituts für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen. "Furthermore, we are pleased that Prof. Maleki now has access to an international research station, research funds, our equipment on machines, the test laboratory and much more. Here's to good cooperation!"


Background:

Prof. Maleki receives a Georg Forster Research Fellowship for postdoctoral researchers and experienced scientists from developing and emerging countries for her own research projects in cooperation with German research institutions. The sponsor is the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation: "We sponsor researchers, regardless of discipline and nationality. Reducing development times for technical textiles by accelerated thermo-oxidative aging in a high-pressure autoclave

Synthetic polymers used in technical textiles can be effectively protected against degradation caused by heat, oxygen, and water through the use of stabilizer systems. This enables service lives of several decades, extending to more than 50 years. As the use of durable technical textiles continues to grow, so does the demand for reliable methods to predict their service life within economically feasible testing periods. For the first time the German Institutes of Textile and Fiber Research Denkendorf (DITF) developed methods for robust service life prediction for textiles in an IGF research project.

Over the next three years, MELANGE will lower the environmental impact of interior textile production by moving colour design to the beginning of the manufacturing process. This Horizon Europe project officially started on 1 August 2026, and will be publicly launched on 27 August 2026.
