IMB 2003: WORLD'S LARGEST INTERNATIONAL SECTOR MEETING

IMB - the world's largest international meeting place for the clothing machinery and textile processing sector - will be opening its doors in Cologne from 6th to 10th May 2003. By far the largest number of new developments and innovations will be on display at IMB 2003, and trade visitors at the fair can expect to see the world's most extensive range of machinery, facilities, electronics and manufacturing technology for the clothing industry and the processing of all kinds of textiles and flexible materials.

Despite the current economic situation, more than 700 companies from 39 countries - including all of the key account companies in the sector - have already registered for IMB 2003. This is an excellent result. With more than 67 per cent of the suppliers coming from abroad, the event will be more international in scope than the previous IMB. In total, 230 companies from Germany and 470 foreign companies will be presenting their ranges of products and services.

Interest in IMB 2003 from Asian countries, particularly China, Korea and Taiwan, has increased significantly. Whereas 31 companies from China and Hong Kong attended IMB 2000, 58 have already registered for the forthcoming fair. In comparison with figures for IMB 2000, there is also a considerable increase in the number of companies participating from Korea (this year: 32; IMB 2000: 29), Taiwan (this year: 43; IMB 2000: 35) and Turkey (this year: 23; IMB 2000: 9). This development emphasises the tremendous importance of IMB in Cologne for the growing Asian technology market - in terms of both covering domestic demand and supplying foreign markets.

IMB 2003 will present the entire textile processing chain - from model and cutting preparation to logistical organization, including interfaces to procurement and sales. Visitors to IMB 2003 will thus have the convenience of being able to find, at one location and time, solutions for all stages of clothing production and textile processing, extending all the way to the retail trade. This includes the product sectors that were presented for the first time at IMB 2000: "Machinery and Technology for the Production of Technical Textiles" and "EDP, Logistics, Transportation and Services".

IMB 2003 will occupy a total area of around 120,000 m2 in Halls 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. The new hall structure means that IMB 2003 will now have two separate, equally impressive entrance areas within the Cologne Exhibition Centre: the entrances to Hall 10/11 and Hall 13/14. In addition to the congress facilities provided in the Congress Centre East, conference rooms in entrance area 10/11 will also be available.

IMB 2003 is divided into five product areas - CAD/CAM and cutting, stitching, product preparation and internal logistics, IT, and technology for the production of technical textiles. It is structured in such a manner that buyers can gain an overview of the entire product range by making a circuit through the halls. The various product segments correspond to the individual production processes used to manufacture clothing and process textiles.

An important topic for the textile and clothing business is of course information technology, especially since the innovation cycles in this area are considerably shorter than in the traditional machine production sector. To meet this demand, companies that focus exclusively on IT issues will be presented at IMB 2003 for the first time in a separate product area in Hall 12.2. This spectrum of offerings will be rounded out by IT-related presentations and symposia held as part of the IMB Forum.
An overview of the IMB 2003 product range:

Halls 9.1, 9.2 ? Cutting, CAD
Halls 10.1, 10.2, 11.1, 11.2 ? Stitching/joining and fastening technology
Halls 12.2 ? IT/EDP, logistics, quality management, media
Halls 13.1,13.2 ? Product preparation, internal material flow, distribution logistics

Machinery/processes for the production of technical textiles are featured in all of the product segments.
The diverse supporting programme at IMB 2003 will supplement the product presentations of the exhibitors to create an attractive overall experience for the textile value chain. Under one roof at the IMB Forum, the Gesellschaft für Beratung, Transfer and Innovation's traditional BTI Forum will be combined for the first time with a series of events organized by Koelnmesse and the VDMA Fachverband Bekleidungs- und Ledertechnik (Association of Garment and Leather Technology).

On four trade fair days there will be series of presentations focussing on a variety of themes that will shed new light on current issues in the sector. The presentations held under the title "IMB Forum 2003" will take place from Tuesday, 6th May 2003 to Friday, 9th May 2003 every afternoon between 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. In addition, in the Speakers' Corner in Hall 12.2, numerous companies exhibiting at IMB 2003 will present themselves and their range of services and products. The first day of the Speakers' Corner has been reserved for members of the Clothing Industry Research Association and will focus on the areas of science and research. All exhibitors will have the opportunity to present their products on the subsequent mornings and afternoons.

Building on the content of the IMB Forum in 2002, the IMB Information Technology Forum on "Supply Chain Management" will bring together the latest developments for the textile and clothing industry on the first day of the fair. An industry expert will discuss the current state of affairs in a comprehensive main presentation and report on the tools and instruments used in supply chain management systems. In three separate sessions under the headings "Software", "Organization & Logistics" and "Case Study: Automotive Supplier Industry", experts will provide detailed insights to small discussion groups.

The BTI Forum, which will take place on Wednesday, 7th May and Thursday, 8th May 2003, will focus on "Securing and Building on Expertise". Practice-orientated reports and topics of current interest will be expertly linked to form the basis of discussions. The first day of the BTI Forum will be devoted entirely to the issue of leadership. Solutions for maintaining expertise by means of knowledge management will be dealt with on the second day.

Another series of presentations to be held at the IMB Forum will be devoted entirely to the key topic of technical textiles. A study of the sports goods market will be presented with a view to examining its connections with the manufacture of ready-to-wear clothes and the parallels and differences between the two segments. Further issues at the round-table discussion will be the application of special construction methods as well as noteworthy aspects in the processing of technical textiles for the complete range of equipment.
