Country on stage: The Netherlands at JEC World 2020

Country on Stage is a unique opportunity for three countries to highlight their composites industries’ specific features. This event, which includes inspiring presentations and insightful discussions, highlights the most important aspects of the composites sector of each country featured this year (South Korea, the Netherlands and Russia). On March 4th, the Netherlands will be in the spotlight from 10:05 am to 11:30am at the Agora (Hall 5).

This session, entitled “Designing Lightness for Sustainability” and organized in cooperation with CompositesNL, will focus on a new technological perspective of composites as a sustainable material and an actor in energy transition, and will take place in two parts.

The first part will focus on specific applications and composite technology which can provide answers to some of the questions on energy transition and contribute to finding sustainable solutions. The Dutch government’s new policy based on this project will be addressed, as well as several examples of innovations in the fields of infrastructure, automobile and wind energy.

The second part will discuss the book “Designing Lightness for Sustainability”, which recounts 25 years of innovations and company developments in the field of composites in Europe and particularly in the Netherlands. The book will be presented by its authors Professor Adriaan Beukers and Ed van Hinte.

More safety and comfort for protective clothing thanks to auxetic fabrics

When everyday materials are pulled, they stretch or elongate in the direction of the pull and become narrower in cross-section. We can also observe this property in two-dimensional textiles. Auxetic structures behave differently here. They have the striking property of not changing under tensile stress or even increasing their width or thickness. These properties are advantageous, for example, in protective textiles or textile filter media. The DITF are researching auxetic fabrics for various applications.
