Cooperation agreement on electrochemical decolorisation of textile effluent

Benninger AG, Uzwil/Switzerland, the German company DyStar and the Research Institute for Textile Chemistry and Textile Physics of the University of Innsbruck (TID) in Dornbirn/Austria have signed a cooperation agreement on the development and commercialisation of technology for electrochemical decolorisation of textile effluent.
COOPERATION AGREEMENT ON ELECTROCHEMICAL DECOLORISATION OF TEXTILE EFFLUENT

Pilot trials show that this technology can remove over 80 percent of the colour from dyehouse effluent, especially effluent contaminated with reactive dyes. Unlike most conventional waste water treatment processes, neither chemicals nor the disposal of residues are necessary. Electrochemical decolorisation is based on the principle that electrons in an electric current split many textile dyes into smaller, colourless parts which are more readily biodegradable. Together with a suitable dye selection, this environment-friendly process allows very efficient treatment of effluent.

Coloured effluent is a by-product of virtually all dyeing processes. These days, stringent environmental regulations require a significant reduction in the colour content of effluent before it can be channelled to municipal waste water treatment plants. The cooperation partners therefore expect the textile finishing industry to be very interested in electrochemical decolorisation.
At this year's ITMA, the leading global trade fair for textile machinery, in Birmingham, UK, DyStar and Benninger will be presenting this technology as a major contribution to environmental protection. Benninger AG regards decolorisation of dyehouse effluent, especially in cold pad-batch dyeing with the BICOFLEX padder, as an integral part of the BEN-COLOUR programme. Alongside its competence in coloration technology, this highlights its commitment to environmental protection.
