Kraig Biocraft Laboratories launches performance yarn development program based on spider silk

New yarn constructions and material blends aim to expand applications in performance textiles, apparel and advanced technical materials

Kraig Biocraft Laboratories has launched a development program for high-performance yarns based on its recombinant spider silk technology. The initiative follows the company's first commercial shipment of a custom spider silk yarn to a performance apparel customer and includes the delivery of spider silk samples to a textile technology company with experience in aerospace-related material development.

The new program will focus on developing yarn constructions and material blends designed for applications in fabrics, apparel and advanced technical textiles. By combining recombinant spider silk with other materials and exploring different yarn structures, Kraig Labs aims to expand the potential uses of its technology.

Building on the first commercial yarn shipment

According to the company, the development program builds on its recent sale and shipment of a custom yarn to a customer in the performance apparel sector. This initial commercial delivery represents a step towards bringing recombinant spider silk from laboratory development into industrial applications.

“Our first custom yarn showed that it is now possible to produce and deliver spider silk to industry,” said Kim Thompson, Founder and CEO of Kraig Labs. “This program takes that further. We are launching the development of new yarns, new constructions, and new blends. Each one is built around the performance and capabilities of spider silk.”

The company expects the program to provide a foundation for several potential commercial applications, including collaborations with apparel brands, textile mills and manufacturers, as well as the development of its own apparel products.

Spider silk samples shipped for advanced material development

Alongside the launch of the program, Kraig Labs has shipped samples of its recombinant spider silk to an unnamed textile technology company specialising in advanced yarn spinning equipment and material development.

According to Kraig Labs, the recipient has previously collaborated with major aerospace manufacturers on the development of advanced fibres and hybrid material structures.

The shipment was made at the request of the technology company and is intended to support the evaluation of recombinant spider silk for demanding applications where material strength, weight and performance are critical factors.

“Spider silk is a material that will earn its place through performance,” Thompson said. “Sending samples of our silk to a firm with this background puts it in front of people who know exactly how to leverage materials with exceptional performance. Every great fabric starts with a yarn. This program is where we build that foundation.”

Exploring new applications for recombinant spider silk

The development of new yarn constructions and blends could open additional opportunities for recombinant spider silk in both conventional and technical textile applications.

The material is being investigated for its potential to combine mechanical performance with low weight, making it of interest for applications requiring specialised fibre properties.

Kraig Labs intends to use its new development program to explore these opportunities and establish additional pathways towards commercialisation.

The company's work on scaling spider silk production was also featured in the March 2026 issue of National Geographic, reflecting broader interest in the development of bioengineered materials for industrial applications.
