Kimberly-Clark develops alternative natural fiber platform for hygiene products
According to Kimberly-Clark, the new fiber has the potential to complement or partially replace traditional wood-based fibers while maintaining the performance and quality required for hygiene products. The company says the technology could also strengthen long-term raw material supply, improve supply chain resilience and support its sustainability strategy.
The new materials platform is the result of more than 20 years of research in plant and fiber science. After evaluating more than 70 alternative fiber sources, Kimberly-Clark selected hesperaloe because of its low water requirements, rapid renewability and suitability for cultivation in arid regions.
To support further development, Kimberly-Clark is building a pilot facility in Yuma, Arizona, and is working with growers, technical experts and local stakeholders to assess the crop's potential for commercial production. Compared with several conventional crops grown in the region, hesperaloe requires significantly less irrigation.
The company believes the new fiber platform could eventually be integrated across its hygiene products portfolio. Testing and product development are continuing.
