Global cotton trade expands as Latin America increases exports

The global cotton trade is projected to expand by 2% in the 2019/20 season, reaching 9.4 million tonnes. China should remain the world’s top importer at 1.8 million tonnes, although that figure would represent a year-over-year decline of 14%.

The current price projection for the year-end average is 80 cents per pound

Production is expected to decrease in some major producing countries, with Turkey being revised downward to 815,000 tonnes and Pakistan to 1.35 million tonnes. As a result, imports will increase for both countries to 818,000 tonnes and 967,000 tonnes, respectively.

Latin America should meet some of that additional demand. Brazil’s production is expected to remain high at 2.76 million tonnes and exports are expected to grow by 19% to 1.7 million tonnes. Argentina also is projected to increase its production to 358,000 tonnes, posting a gain of 39%, while imports are expected to increase by 57% to 186,000 tonnes.

At current estimates of production and consumption, cotton prices should make modest gains through the end of the season. The Secretariat’s current price projection for the year-end average of the Cotlook A Index has been revised to 80 cents per pound.

ICAC to support European Commission on pending PEF legislation

The Commission developed the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) to assess and communicate the life cycle environmental performance of products and organizations.

ICAC to collaborate with Uzbekistan and Bizpando on regenerative agriculture

The Government of Uzbekistan has allocated 55,000 hectares of land to implement a regenerative agriculture program for cotton as part of a collaborative project with the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) and Bizpando, a company with a a blockchain-based internet platform designed to ensure supply chain compliance.

ICAC announces postponement of the 83rd Plenary Meeting in Tanzania

Due to unforeseen circumstances arising from the recent developments in Tanzania, the ICAC has announced that its upcoming 83rd Plenary Meeting has been postponed. Scheduled for Nov. 17-20 in Mwanza, the delay was recommended by Tanzania, and the decision was made out of an abundance of caution, prioritizing the safety and well-being of all participants.

OEKO-TEX® today announced a full collaboration with TextileGenesis, a Lectra company, to digitally trace and authenticate organic cotton, strengthening fraud prevention across the supply chain. This announcement follows a successful pilot and brings together OEKO-TEX®’s certification expertise and closed testing system with TextileGenesis’ digital traceability platform to deliver a secure, end-to-end solution for managing certified organic cotton flows.

Award-winning research for sustainable carbon fibre cycles

Sustainable recycling of carbon fibres is possible through targeted electrochemical surface modification, which makes the sizing of carbon fibres resistant to solvolysis. ITA PhD student Sabina Dann was awarded the MSW Award from RWTH Aachen University for her master's thesis on this development. The award ceremony took place on 12 November 2025 in Aachen.
