SGL Carbon presents new products and new brand at ACHEMA 2018

The stand in hall 4.0, F26 focusses on the topics of innovations, products and partnerships. One example for the solution competence of SGL Carbon is the newly developed silicon carbide (SiC) tube sheet for heat exchangers. The patent-pending design uses a SiC intermediate plate in place of solutions based on PFA-lined carbon steel (perfluoroalkoxy) and offers an optimized seal, preventing corrosion or damage to the sheets even after 100 cycles. In addition, a concept for electronical leak detection will be presented.
Together with technology group GEA, SGL Carbon has developed a new steam jet vacuum pump made of DIABON® graphite, which will also be on show. Compared with pumps made of porcelain, the main material used to date, the new vacuum pumps feature many advantages, such as energy savings of up to 30 percent, a greater degree of design freedom and faster delivery times.
Carbon 3D printing shows the company’s innovative capacity. After the market launch of CARBOPRINT®, which stands for printed carbon and graphite components, SGL Carbon has now expanded its 3D printing expertise to silicon carbide under the brand name SICAPRINTTM. Silicon carbide (SiC) features an extremely high hardness, stiffness and strength, as well as high thermal conductivity.
Finished by means of liquid silicon infiltration, the materials can also be used continuously at temperatures far beyond 1,000°C in air. On the final day of the fair, the topic “3D printing of carbon and SiC” will be discussed in detail by an expert from SGL Carbon as part of the “Chemical Engineering Additive Manufacturing” session.
At the second stand in hall 8.0, L81, among other things SGL Carbon will present newly developed oxidation-resistant textile yarns ideal for high temperature applications. The new yarn based on polyacrylonitrile features a high purity with a carbon content of equal or superior 99.5 percent, resulting in optimized oxidation resistance. This special coating makes it ideal for use at high temperatures with minimal weight loss. In addition, the company will be showcasing to visitors from the automotive industry its high level of solution expertise, using in-house graphite specialties.
