SIMAC Tanning Tech 2021 - finally a trade fair again

On 21 September, after 19 months, SIMAC Tanning Tech is reopening its doors in Milan as first trade fair for the footwear and leather machinery sector. SIMAC Tanning Tech is one of the world's leading trade fairs in the sector, where the main manufacturers of machines and technologies for the footwear, leather and tanning industries meet every year.

The VDMA Textile Care, Fabric and Leather Technologies is exhibiting at this year's SIMAC Tanning Tech together with the two member companies Global International B.V. and PMF GmbH Maschinenfabrikation as part of a VDMA Services joint participation. In addition, other VDMA member companies have their own stands at the show. "The presence of German and European companies at SIMAC Tanning Tech shows that companies want and are looking for face-to-face meetings at trade fairs," says Elgar Straub, Managing Director VDMA TFL (Textile Care, Fabric and Leather Technologies). "In addition, exhibitors are hoping for further important investment impetus after a sharp drop in orders and sales due to the pandemic in 2020."

Export markets down in 2020, improvement in sight

German manufacturers of footwear and leather technology were able to export machinery worth 40.69 million euros in 2020, which was 17 percent less than in 2019 (48.96 million euros). In the first half of 2021, however, exports already increased by 12 percent year-on-year to 21.22 million euros. As in previous years, the industry's major export market remains the USA, followed by France and Mexico.

VDMA Textile Machinery with new Executive Board

At the general meeting of VDMA Textile Machinery held in Hanover at the end of September, Dr Janpeter Horn, Managing Director of A. Herzog Maschinenfabrik, was re-elected as Chairman of the trade association. Regina Brückner, managing partner of Brückner Trockentechnik, and Verena Thies, managing partner of Thies Textilmaschinen, will once again serve as vice-chairs for the next four years.

Young talents honoured – 60 years Walter Reiners Foundation

At the Techtextil trade fair in Frankfurt at the end of April, Peter D. Dornier, chairman of the VDMA’s Walter Reiners Foundation, presented awards to five successful young engineers. Promotion and sustainability awards were presented in the categories of bachelor’s/project theses and diploma/master’s theses. Academic theses are eligible for the sustainability awards if, for example, they develop solutions for resource-efficient products and technologies.

Young researchers recognised for cutting-edge work in recycling, fibre technology and textile mechanics

At the Aachen-Dresden-Denkendorf International Textile Conference held in Aachen at the end of November, Peter D. Dornier, Chairman of the Walter Reiners Foundation of the VDMA, honoured five successful young engineers. Promotion and sustainability prizes were awarded in the categories bachelor/project theses and diploma/master theses. Academic theses that develop solutions for resource-saving products and technologies, for example, are eligible for the sustainability awards.

VDMA members at ITMA ASIA + CITME in Singapore

With 69 exhibiting member companies, ITMA ASIA + CITME 2025 is once again marked by a strong presence of VDMA companies. Altogether 82 companies from Germany will exhibit at the show, covering about 3,500 square meters of exhibition space, topped only by China and Italy. VDMA initiated a German Pavilion with two group stands (spinning in hall 4 and finishing in hall 7) with a total of 30 exhibitors.

European and Canadian textile associations call for stronger transatlantic cooperation

Ahead of the EU–Canada Summit in Montréal on 29–30 October 2026, EURATEX, the Canadian Textile Industry Association (CTIA) and the Canadian Apparel Federation (CAF) have issued a joint statement calling for closer industrial cooperation, improved implementation of the CETA trade agreement and stronger partnerships in innovation, sustainability and advanced textile technologies.

Heimtextil 2027 introduces Functional Futures Lab for innovative performance materials

Heimtextil 2027, taking place from 12 to 15 January in Frankfurt, will introduce the Functional Futures Lab, a new special showcase dedicated to innovative materials and their functional properties. Curated by Future Fabrics Expo, the exhibition will present developments ranging from temperature-regulating and flame-resistant textiles to bio-based composites and experimental material concepts. By bringing together early-stage prototypes and commercially available solutions, the showcase aims to provide guidance for future material selection and product development in architecture, interior design and hospitality.

VistaPrint increases apparel production capacity with Kornit Apollo

Kornit Digital (NASDAQ: KRNT), a provider of on-demand digital textile production technologies, reports that VistaPrint has significantly increased its apparel production capacity through the implementation of the Kornit Apollo system. The installation has enabled the international print and design company to add approximately 25,000 units of weekly production capacity while improving production speed, operational efficiency and order turnaround times.

Picanol to unveil new AirOne airjet weaving machine at ITMA Asia 2026

From November 20 to 24, 2026, Picanol will present the world premiere of its new AirOne generation of airjet weaving machines at ITMA Asia + CITME in Shanghai.
