Significant recovery of the order situation

In April 2021, manufacturers of Textile Care, Fabric and Leather Technologies in Germany were able to increase their incoming orders by 69 percent in real terms compared to the previous year. Orders from Germany increased by 55 percent and from abroad by as much as 80 percent. In April, 158 percent more orders came from the euro countries, while the non-euro countries increased their orders by 22 percent. Turnover also increased by 9.5 per cent compared to the previous year.

"After pandemic-related sharp drops in orders and sales in 2020, the order books of many companies?are gradually filling up again," said Elgar Straub, Managing Director VDMA Textile Care, Fabric and?Leather Technologies. "However, international travel restrictions as well as a still difficult pandemic?situation in many countries of the world continue to pose a major challenge. In addition, there are?currently the exploding raw material prices with massive delivery delays for primary products, still?severely restricted and very expensive transport conditions and a considerable shortage of packaging?materials.”

Export markets down in 2020, improvement in sight

The manufacturers of Textile Care, Fabric and Leather Technologies were able to export machines?worth 788 million euros in 2020, which was 9.5 percent less than in 2019 (872 million euros). The most?important export market in 2020 was Poland, followed by the US and France.

Exports to Poland?increased by 69 per cent to 89 million euros in 2020, whereas exports to the United States decreased?by 12 per cent to 77 million euros. Likewise, exports to France fell by 8 per cent to 68 million euros.

Poland remained the most important export market for the industry in the first quarter of 2021, followed?by France and the US. In particular, exports within the EU developed positively in the first quarter of?2021, increasing by 3 per cent to 90 million euros.

VDMA Textile Machinery with new Executive Board

At the general meeting of VDMA Textile Machinery held in Hanover at the end of September, Dr Janpeter Horn, Managing Director of A. Herzog Maschinenfabrik, was re-elected as Chairman of the trade association. Regina Brückner, managing partner of Brückner Trockentechnik, and Verena Thies, managing partner of Thies Textilmaschinen, will once again serve as vice-chairs for the next four years.

Young talents honoured – 60 years Walter Reiners Foundation

At the Techtextil trade fair in Frankfurt at the end of April, Peter D. Dornier, chairman of the VDMA’s Walter Reiners Foundation, presented awards to five successful young engineers. Promotion and sustainability awards were presented in the categories of bachelor’s/project theses and diploma/master’s theses. Academic theses are eligible for the sustainability awards if, for example, they develop solutions for resource-efficient products and technologies.

Young researchers recognised for cutting-edge work in recycling, fibre technology and textile mechanics

At the Aachen-Dresden-Denkendorf International Textile Conference held in Aachen at the end of November, Peter D. Dornier, Chairman of the Walter Reiners Foundation of the VDMA, honoured five successful young engineers. Promotion and sustainability prizes were awarded in the categories bachelor/project theses and diploma/master theses. Academic theses that develop solutions for resource-saving products and technologies, for example, are eligible for the sustainability awards.

VDMA members at ITMA ASIA + CITME in Singapore

With 69 exhibiting member companies, ITMA ASIA + CITME 2025 is once again marked by a strong presence of VDMA companies. Altogether 82 companies from Germany will exhibit at the show, covering about 3,500 square meters of exhibition space, topped only by China and Italy. VDMA initiated a German Pavilion with two group stands (spinning in hall 4 and finishing in hall 7) with a total of 30 exhibitors.

EURATEX urges Member States to prioritise competitiveness in the next EU budget

Data and skills, not algorithms, hold back AI adoption in textiles, finds ITMF and ITA white paper

The International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF) and the Institut für Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen University (ITA) have published a new white paper entitled AI in the Textile Value Chain: A Strategic Guide to Artificial Intelligence for the Global Textile Industry. The study concludes that the main barriers to artificial intelligence adoption in the textile and apparel industry are not technological limitations, but poor data integration, skills shortages and gaps in governance. According to the authors, further progress will depend on coordinated efforts to develop capabilities across the industry.

Mahlo introduces AI-supported Orthopac RVMC-20 plus at ITMA Asia 2026

From November 20 to 24, 2026, Mahlo GmbH + Co. KG will present its system portfolio for the textile industry at ITMA Asia in Shanghai. Together with its local sales and service partner Kuantex and Mahlo China, the Bavarian technology specialist will demonstrate at Booth C22 in Hall 7.1 how intelligent measurement and control technology can improve the quality and efficiency of textile production processes. The spotlight will be on the new Orthopac RVMC-20 plus, which combines precise weft straightening with fully integrated process control.

STFI showcases new Textile LAB Professional with focus on climate protection and sustainable technologies

The Sächsisches Textilforschungsinstitut e. V. (STFI) in Chemnitz is organising a themed day on 3 December 2026, focusing on climate protection and the environment. As well as showcasing current applications for green cities and natural fibres for lightweight construction, the event will feature machine demonstrations in the new Textile LAB Professional. Under the motto ‘Design meets Technology’, this networking event will also provide an insight into artistic student projects, thereby facilitating a professional exchange on creative perspectives and modern technologies for climate protection and the environment.
