EURATEX welcomes talks for the EU-New Zealand FTA

This week, the European Commission and New Zealand are holding another round of negotiations to reach the Free Trade Agreement. At EURATEX we welcome the commitment of the European Commission in pursuing a comprehensive trade agenda, especially in these turbulent times, in which trade is more important than ever. It will help the European economy recovering and stimulate production.

New Zealand is indeed an important trade partner for the textile and clothing sector given that EU exports increased by + 27% between 2014 and 2019, and in 2019 they amounted to almost €70 million. In the same year, EU main exports were apparel products (chapters 61 and 62). On the other hand, the Textile sector represented 66% of the share of exports in 2019.

Until now, negotiations run quite smoothly, and we can see some significant progresses. The next round of negotiations should address several issues, including rules of origin for the Textile and Clothing sector and we look forward to working with the EC for the benefit of EU textile and clothing companies.

Towards pragmatic and harmonised labelling in the EU

EDANA, alongside 14 European associations, urges the European Commission and Member States to adopt a pragmatic approach for the future harmonised packaging labels, in line with the EU’s agenda for the EU Single Market, simplification and competitiveness. The system should rely on text-free pictograms, available in achromatic or monochromatic versions matching the packaging palette, with the possibility of using digital labelling as a core element. Our associations represent manufacturers of consumer goods across Europe.

Textile PRO Forum calls for greater harmonisation of textile EPR systems across Europe

The Textile PRO Forum has published a new analysis highlighting the need for greater harmonisation of textile Extended Producer Responsibility systems across Europe. The document, Toward harmonised Textile EPR Systems in Europe: analysis and recommendations, presents the results of work carried out by Workstream 1 of the Textile PRO Forum, led by Dr. Eng. Viola Corbellini, Strategic Development and Innovation Expert at Erion Textiles, and Eng. Luca Campadello, General Director at Erion Textiles. The workstream focused on reducing administrative burden for textile producers by identifying areas where procedures could be better aligned across countries.

ITMF survey shows slight improvement in global textile industry despite continued pressure

The 40th ITMF Global Textile Industry Survey (GTIS), conducted from 21 to 29 September 2026, shows a slight improvement in the global business situation, to -23pp, well above the November 2023 low of -46pp. Conditions nevertheless remain weak, in what has become a new normal of high uncertainty. Only South Asia (+13pp) and Africa (+9pp) are positive, while Europe (-36pp), South America (-44pp) and North & Central America (-56pp) report the weakest conditions.

At the general meeting of VDMA Textile Machinery held in Hanover at the end of September, Dr Janpeter Horn, Managing Director of A. Herzog Maschinenfabrik, was re-elected as Chairman of the trade association. Regina Brückner, managing partner of Brückner Trockentechnik, and Verena Thies, managing partner of Thies Textilmaschinen, will once again serve as vice-chairs for the next four years.
