The Proposte furnishing fabrics and curtains exhibition will celebrate its 20th anniversary at Villa Erba di Cernobbio (Como) from 8th to 10th of May.

It's been twenty years since Villa Erba first hosted Proposte, giving the world its first look at all that's new in furnishing fabrics and curtains.
The first edition held on the 4th, 5th and 6th of May 1993 was host to 44 exhibitors, including 6 from abroad, and covered a floor area of 2900 sq metres. 2361 people came through the doors, with foreign visitors accounting for 36%. They didn't have the traditional music concert back then, instead the show opened with a band from Rovenna, a tiny hamlet on the outskirts of Cernobbio! Straight after this 1993 debut, their passion for textiles – which has been paraphrased in this year's slogan We weave passion – elevated Proposte to the levels of quality and international reach it has been known for ever since: the 6300 sq metre exhibition space is consistently sold out, visitors flock in from 70 countries around the globe, with foreigners accounting for 61%, and every year the show welcomes 105-110 exhibitors, half of them from abroad.

The Proposte organizers say that it's this same passion for textiles that, from the very start, has guided them in determining Proposte's strict selection criteria, what means that only hand-picked European manufacturers of furnishing fabrics, curtains and trimmings and their high-quality products make the grade, while the event is open to visitors in six restricted categories on an invitation-only basis. In preparation of the big event Proposte is working at a conference on February 15th in Milan with some of Italy's leading architects as it continues the research it initiated two years ago into the contract market: what fabrics, what curtains, what styles, what colours? And what upholstered furniture? Other aspects of interior decoration will be covered during this third meeting. The exhibitor list of Proposte 2012 -featuring a number of new businesses- will be announced in March.
