Huntsman Textile Effects’ Flagship AVITERA® Range Scores 5 Stars in Environmental Leader Technology Reviews
A division of Huntsman Corporation (NYSE: HUN) and a leading manufacturer of textile dyes and chemicals, Hunstman Textile Effects’s flagship AVITERA® range scored an impressive stellar 5-star rating review (out of a possible 5) in the The Environmental Leader Technology (ELT) Review program. Huntsman Textile Effects is one of the only two 5-star recipients this year among the hundreds of submissions received.
To celebrate this win, over 3,000 Huntsman Textile Effects associates and contractors around the world will unite to participate in the Big Switch Off program to turn off non-essential lights for one hour on 22 March from 12 noon – 1 pm in support of the Earth Hour initiative. This effort will result in an estimated 115 kwh savings, ample to power up a 20 watt compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) lightbulb for 5,760 hours or 240 days.
The Big Switch Off initiative is a reaffirmation of one of Huntsman Textile Effects core value to take sustainable approaches to business through the highest standards of product stewardship and to contribute back to the communities we operate in.
“Sustainability runs deep within HTE. We are pleased to take this opportunity to live out our core values in a tangible manner and to have all our associates and contractors from across our global operations to come together to do their part to conserve energy through this meaningful initiative. We hope that through this activity, many other industry players will also be encouraged to do likewise and together, work to raise the bar for environmental sustainability,” added Paul Hulme, Global President of Huntsman Textile Effects.
The Environmental Leader Technology Reviews is a program recognizing excellence in products and services that provide companies with energy and environmental benefits. Scores were evaluated by a panel of independent judges from companies and leading institutions including PepsiCo, Staples, the University of California Berkeley, ISS Facilities Services, The Green Grid, LNS Research, Owens Corning, Yahoo! Inc., GlaxoSmithKline, Legrand, Petco, and New Belgium Brewing Company.
With today’s crowded playing field, energy and sustainability professionals have a notoriously difficult time knowing what products to choose to help their companies increase energy, environmental and sustainability performance. The Environmental Leader Technology Review program gives companies a solid base of products, vetted by experts, from which to choose.
“The caliber of the entries was impressive, and truly showed the innovation taking place in the industry today,” says Paul Nastu, publisher of Environmental Leader. “The judges had their work cut out for them. It was a tough playing field for those that entered, and the products that scored 3.5 Stars or higher are those that the judges say have viable attributes that set them apart from others in the field.” He added, “We launched the Technology Reviews program to inform those in the energy and environmental space about the best and most useful products available, and to honor the companies creating them. The AVITERA® Dye System from Huntsman Textile Effects is one of those truly impressive products with the potential to make a tremendous environmental impact. As such, it was recognized with a 5 star rating.”
Added Stephen Gray, Global Vice President of Strategic Marketing and Planning from Huntsman Textile Effects, “This stellar 5-star result is a strong testament to Huntsman Textile Effects’ robust research and technology efforts in creating award-winning, innovative products such as AVITERA® that fulfils market needs. More importantly, it is a strong endorsement that we are leading the industry by taking a responsible and long-term view on sustainability. With the success in creating sustainable technologies, Huntsman Textile Effects will continue to focus on leading innovation and develop wider portfolios of textile effects that can help provide a competitive edge and differentiation in today’s dynamic business environment.”
AVITERA® SE is Huntsman Textile Effects’ innovative flagship dye technology for exhaust application on cellulosic fibers and is tailor-made to help businesses make real economic and environment savings. With dyeing and washing-off processes never exceeding 60°C, AVITERA® SE helps textile mills increase production outputs and significantly reduce water and energy consumption and carbon emissions by up to 50 percent. Using only five percent or less unfixed dye instead of the conventional 15 to 30 percent, AVITERA® SE greatly reduces the number of rinsing baths required to obtain fastness properties.
Its high solubility also allows dyes to be applied at ultra-short ratios, ensuring much lower processing costs. AVITERA® SE’s outstanding compatibility and low sensitivity to dyeing parameters also gives excellent lab-to-bulk and bulk-to-bulk reproducibility, thereby minimizing reprocessing.
This is what the judges had to say about AVITERA®:
“Immediately impressed by the lower temperature functionality and the lower number of rinse baths needed. Great treatment of stakeholder collaboration…very effective educational and marketing materials. Great job at communicating the interface between environment, society, and economy — the triple bottom line. Good factoids to set context for why these dyes have incremental advantages.”
“Innovative approach with wide potential for impact if scaled over printed fabric production worldwide; major potential for environmental impact.”
The Avitera dyes were engineered for sustainability and provide a clear economic and sustainable value proposition, particularly in markets facing water constraints but that are also highly dependent on industries that utilize cotton.”
